The Girl Mirage™ is Geena Matuson, award-winning Multimedia Artist and Writer working in media communications and digital arts. In 2013, Geena graduated from Massachusetts College of Art & Design with a BFA in Film/Video, also receiving the annual Award for Excellence in Liberal Arts. While at university, Geena held a two-year term on the MassArt Activities Council (MAC Board), producing over 50 successful events with both the university and gallery exhibitions.
Geena's expansive works have been featured in festivals and gallery shows internationally including CyberArts Festival and PH21 Gallery in Budapest. Among her list of accolades, Geena was a semi-finalist in the Adobe Design Achievement Awards for her short film Ice Cream For Breakfast (2013), and her work in collaborative project 'The Coorain Calendar' is part of Boston Athenæum's permanent artist book collection.
In late 2017, she published her first book 'Dadalectic: Waking Dream,' a dadaist collection of poetic stories and dreamy artworks, paving the way for her future art, poetry and trade books.
From an early age, Geena has told stories strange and surreal through written and spoken word, and visual arts. A deep interest in semiotics and psychology, Geena's personal work often evokes a sense of synaesthesia, and even a sense of humor. Largely an auditory learner, sound and rhythm play a central role, and a focus on dreams add to the experimental and often surreal nature carried throughout the body of her work, creating a holistic experience.
Her passion for organizing is one of the reasons she's able to be so prolific, motivated by a strong desire to share stories that shine a light on societal perceptions.
Influences include Salvador Dali, Marc Chagall, Edward Gorey, Virginia Woolf, Brazilian jazz, Jean-Luc Godard, French New Wave, Serge Gainsbourg, The Mighty Boosh, pilgrims, Dadaism, Marxism, Feudalism, Occultism, and a few other -isms that may have gone overlooked.
In 2016, Geena was elected to the Board of Trustees for Medfield Memorial Public Library where she promotes STEAM education and programming. Realizing her passion for marketing and advertising, she simultaneously received several Certificates of Specialization in Business Analytics with Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania online. Soon thereafter, she completed the Digital Marketing Certificate Program with General Assembly in Boston, MA.
Some of her clients have included Lucky's Market, Randy's Garage, TickleJuice, and Traveler Kit & Co. She's written for such organizations and press outlets as Hometown Publications, Boston LGBTQIA Artist Alliance, as well as for her clients.
A working foundation in multimedia and journalism, Geena will pursue her Masters in the Goldring Arts Journalism Program at Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications for the 2018-2019 academic year.
