It seems I do some crazy stunts with John Hartman of Reel Groovy Films around Halloween, like last year's shoot in a haunted maze with me covered in zombie make-up, part of his ongoing project 'The Shackling,' plus a little off-shoot video titled 'Evil Clown Evil.' This year, I received a cryptic message:
"We shall go to the woods and do witch dancing. You get to burn my voodoo doll, so I shall burn up as well...we hope to burn you at the stake, but shall angle it (film through the flames) so you do not actually burn and die..."
What began as a short, fake trailer for the opening of 'The Shackling' turned into enough footage for a feature film on the witches of Salem. One of my favorite topics? Check ✓. One of my favorite people? Check ✓. Being fake-burned at the stake? Check ✓.
But first, we enchanted Trevor and did our sacred witch dance. We pushed and pulled without laying a finger on the 'poor and unsuspecting' pilgrim. I love the quality of these screenshots taken on John's old VHS camera - I can't wait to see the final cut!
Then, Maya and I were forced to either admit our witchery, or be burned at the stake. We clearly chose the latter. See that discomfort and pain on Maya's face? We'll could call it acting, but it was really too much smoke inhalation. (Luckily, she was okay!)
But, then, I set Dawn Nightshade's collar on fire with my fiery witchcraft, and you can watch this slow-motion video on Instagram, or by clicking the image below. It's pretty awesome - as in, full of awe - and pretty funny. (Well, at least we laugh when we watch it.)
It's kind of crazy what you'll do when you're making a film, as if the rules and roles in real life don't apply - it's for a film. Put a camera in someone's hands and they can stand on a table for a great high-angle. The crazier part is, put a camera in someone's hands and onlookers approve, eager to be on camera...for the most part.
Maya pranced and frolicked through the woods, transforming from a beautiful pilgrim woman to a horrible witch. This video of Maya's sudden freeze mid-spin is mesmerizing...
