I recently worked as Creative Director on a couples photoshoot with Zach Murphy of ZAM Photo and The Traveling ZAM! Zach is also working on a "Faces of Places" project, "showcasing the humanity we all share while celebrating the cultural differences that make us each so unique." I wanted to shoot something for my portfolio, and Zach wanted to try this experimental "neon carnival" theme. Conveniently, he'd be in town during the New York State Fair, and I knew a "couple" who would be perfect for the idea.
My friend Molly, dancer, teacher and iSchool Library Studies grad student, was one of the members in this couple, and we ventured to the fair a few days before the shoot to have some fun and check out all the neon for our shoot later in the week.
Two days later, we had THE ZAM and Molly's boyfriend Jake, co-owner of Syracuse's Spark Contemporary Art Space, with male clothes provided by 315Alive collaborator Cliff Carey of American Reserve Clothing Co.
These behind-the-scenes phone photos are just a preview of what's to come! The sun set rapidly and our constant movement - along with my second job as reflector-holder - limited the snaps I could get.
It was so exciting to work with someone so collaborative and equally excited about a shoot. So often I have worked on shoots with crew for which few are as excited as me. My style is very...Steve-Martin-in-Bowfinger (1999), and it's sort of sad when the others on your team aren't as excitable, haha.
Plus, Zach managed to get a few cool shots of me as "test shots" that we can also use. I haven't been the subject of a shoot in a very, very long time, and it was fun to do that again.
Keep an eye out for some preview photos from the shoot!
